The ogre is a fairly common monster known to serve as both villain and occasional hero.

From modern fiction to movies, ogres have found their way into nearly every existent media form today. Why are they so common? The ogre is an easily recognizable character. Despite varying body proportions, intelligence, motives and skin colors, the ogre is usually recognized instantly by an audience, whether they are watching one in a movie or reading about one in a novel. Furthermore, the name ogre is in the public domain so it is free of any legal complications that might come with other famous monsters.

The ogre seems to appear most in modern fiction and fantasy novels. It can be found in novel series like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Depicted in a more traditional form, the ogre is a giant monster that hinders the protagonists in these stories. While they may simply be an unimportant obstacle in some novels, they can also be key parts of the plot in others. In some cases they are even the protagonist. In the Piers Anthony novel series about the world of Xanth, there are characters like Smash Ogre, who take on the hero role instead of becoming the less intelligent, human-eating monster you would normally expect to see.

Ogres also show up in films from time to time. For example, in the movie Time Bandits the main character must steal a ship from an outsmarted Ogre and his wife. The film Shrek also has an ogre for a protagonist. Here the ogre is not simply a terrible monster that wants to eat humans, but rather a lonely one who wants to remain isolated from the rest of the world. Shrek uses his race's mythology to keep intruders out of his home, but reveals more human qualities when he meets Fiona, a princess who secretly is an ogress, or female ogre.

Ogres have played a role in video games and television shows. The evil yet oafish Ogremon in the cartoon Digimon depicts the creature of myth the way it was originally seen. The series developed merchandise, like clothes, toys, comics and trading cards. Aside of this, many fantasy related video games like Final Fantasy, Warcraft, Dungeons and Dragons and Everquest have provided the famed monster for adventurers to slaughter.

The ogre is a popular character in modern media. It can change a lot, depending on the vision of the artist creating it. Some may treat it like a normal monster, while others might turn it into a smart, functioning individual. No matter how it is depicted, it will always be recognized by the audience.
