Reptiles and lizards are some of the most fascinating species to inhabit the planet. They have figured into a variety of genres, including ancient mythology, popular fiction, science fiction, history, comics and film. From dinosaurs to dragons to conspiracy theories of alien reptilian humanoids, this cold-blooded species continues to play a key role in the human imagination.
The Lizardmen of Warhammer Fantasy are some of the most easily recognizable reptilian creations. Created by Games Workshop in 1983, Warhammer Fantasy is a popular tabletop role-playing game, which has since evolved into board games, novels and computer games.
Warhammer is an alternate world inhabited by god-like beings simply known as the Old Ones, who developed several different species and races to inhabit this world. The Lizardmen were created from existing amphibians residing in the jungles of the continent known as Lustria. The Lizardmen were specifically created to act as guardians of the world and to carry out the will of the Old Ones.
The Lizardmen are comprised of several sub species differentiated by their physical traits and roles. The oldest are the Slann, magic-wielding priests whose duties are to carry out the will of the Old Ones. They are physically weak, but mentally powerful with strong telepathic powers.
The Saurus are Lizardmen who function as warriors. Although they are mentally weak, they are physical powerhouses who never cease growing in size or strength. Their cousins are the Kroxigors, who like them are physically strong, but also mentally weak. The Kroxigors are the laborers of the Lizardmen and occasionally will join their cousins in battle.
The Skinks are the artists and craftsman of the Lizardmen. They have communication, metalworking and temple organizational skills. Although the Skinks do have some magic, they are largely responsible for capturing the wild reptiles and dinosaurs that inhabit the jungles and training them as Beasts of War.
Dungeons & Dragons is another popular role-playing fantasy game with famous reptilian creatures called the Lizard Folk. Dungeons & Dragons was one of the first tabletop role-playing games and was designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in 1974. Dungeons & Dragons continues to be popular and has since crosses over into magazines, animated series and computer games.
The Lizard Folk are a reptile-human hybrid species who inhabit the swamps and marshes in the fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons. They are excellent swimmers, average 6 to 7 feet in height, are mostly omnivores and have a tail averaging 3 to 4 feet in length. They are covered in dull green, brown or grey scales.
Like the Lizardmen, they are comprised of many different sub species characterized by their physical traits. The Blackscale has large dark scales and enjoys acid while the Viletooth are genetically related to Black Dragons. The most prestigious of the species is the Lizard King, who contains demon-blood and rules over the rest of the tribes.
Contemporary images of reptiles have transformed greatly from the serpent kings of the Aztecs and the feared dragons of the Middle Ages. With the advent of fantasy games, reptiles have morphed into organized societies with human traits. Reptiles will continue to remain a strong presence in human imagination through the popular creations of the Lizardmen and Lizard Folk.
