They might sound like the name of a tool or automotive part, but kobolds actually are creatures originating from Germanic folklore.

The kobold is known to the Germans as an evil spirit or household spirit, usually resembling a small human and sometimes is wrinkly or accompanied by a tail. A kobold would choose a specific house and test the family who resided there. If they treated the kobold respectfully and positively responded to its tests, it would move in with them. Upon moving in, the family would be required to feed the kobold and it would perform services for them, like treating their animals. If it became angry due to mistreatment or not being fed accordingly, it would take action against the family. Depending on how the kobold was feeling, its vengeful actions could range from mischievous pranks to serious offenses.

The kobold has never embodied only one form or character trait, but usually is depicted in the gaming world as evil. Its form is always changing, depending on how it is visualized by designers. Depiction usually sets the tone for their strength and actions. The kobold sometimes will look like a dog-type of creature, which is how it is portrayed in games like Suikoden and Ragnarok Online. Typically, the dog form would designate them to be weak and easy to kill.

Kobolds in the games Neverwinter Nights and Xenosaga take on a more lizard-like humanoid form. In games like Dark Age of Camelot, Dungeons & Dragons or the Palladium Fantasy Role-Playing Game, kobolds have a much more human form. With their ever-changing appearance, kobolds might look more like gremlins, goblins or even fairies in games like Magic the Gathering. In Final Fantasy XI online, kobolds take the form of an angry and evil-looking gremlin, known as an Evil Weapon.

Though the kobold has no specific body type, personality or characteristic trait, it is well known for being evil, yet weak. Typically kobolds are weak creatures that only low level players will have problems fighting. While they may group together in certain areas, kobolds generally worship or are controlled by a being of higher power. As gaming has progressed, the kobold has started to as well. Some games have granted the kobold more power than it is commonly known to have. In Final Fantasy XI the Evil Weapons are a mid to high level family that can cut down an adventurer fairly fast. In Dark Age of Camelot, gamers can even choose to play as the kobold.

Although they started as German folklore, kobolds have become a fairly popular monster or race in fantasy gaming, not always recognized due to inconsistencies, but still there. They are mostly thought of as a joke in the gaming community, but are beginning to advance past their weak stereotype. Kobolds work well for gaming since they have no static forms or traits. The game developers can mold these creatures into almost anything that they choose.
