They may be best known for assisting Santa Clause with the production of his toys, but elves play a much larger role in the fantasy community. They have evolved from short, weak pawns who only serve other people. In most fantasy settings, elves are tall and powerful, sometimes even immortal. They are most often very involved in the plot of the story, serving a stronger purpose than mere support. Due to their popularity, they can be found in most forms of media.

The supply of fantasy novels is almost never ending. While elves have always served a purpose in these books, they may not have gotten to where they are without The Lord of the Rings. Having played a major role in the J.R.R. Tolkien series of books, elves have become very popular in the fantasy world. Characters like Arwen, Elrond and the bow and arrow wielding Legolas made the race of pointy eared woodland beings more of a demand in the fantasy community.

The Lord of the Rings is the most popular movie to contain elves. Although the book series was a major hit for fantasy lovers, the movie series was even bigger. The three movies The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King filled movie theaters with more than just the fans of the books. People who did not have the reading stamina to work through the story in written format could now view it in a matter of hours. These movies spawned a lot of merchandise, including many video games which feature Legolas as a playable character.

Elves are a trademark race in fantasy gaming, even outside of The Lord of the Rings. There are several types of fantasy elves, depending on the game and its world. Several elven races exist amidst video games. Final Fantasy XI and The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion allow players to take on the role of the elf during their adventures. Video games such as Neverwinter Nights and Everquest 2 even supply half-elves as playable races to their gamers.

The tabletop game Warhammer has more specific elvaan roles, such as dark elves and high elves. These beings can differ from the ones in other games, as they are not always the same. In some cases they may be magical or nature-oriented, as their mythology suggests. Other games might simply make them more suited to physical combat.

The elf has many mythological origins, but is typically known to be magical, immortal and live in nature. These creatures will change a lot depending on the story, but they appear often in the fantasy genre whether within novels, movies or games. They have no set or specific loyalties, so the roles they play in fantasy stories will also change, however, elves tend to side with the good more frequently than evil.
