Miniature Wargaming Scenery: The War Store, Floating Terrain, Trees, Suspension Bridges And Railroad Tracks

Are you interested in miniature wargaming? If so, your first priority is to have figures as well as weapons and vehicles. However, the wargame board isn't complete without miniature wargaming scenery. If the board depicts a battlefield (World War II for example) trees, bridges, railroad tracks and buildings complete the game board.

Instead of buying pre-made miniature wargaming scenery, websites are available on the Internet with instructions about how to build your own miniature wargaming scenery objects. Terragenesis.co.uk posted instructions on how to build missile silos and control bunkers using cardboard cereal boxes, a compass cutter, masking tape, paint, LED lights and batteries and wires. Sand bags on the exterior of the control bunker were created using modeling putty. Old compact discs were used as templates for cutting out the silos approximate shape before they were trimmed down to size.

Another website, warterrain.com, shows how to create a "floating terrain" piece piece of miniature wargaming scenery using a piece of Styrofoam, a soldering gun, chain, wire and green flock. The finished piece will depict a multi-tiered object such as the side of a hill with ladders and suspension bridges. Paint was used to depict a rocky structure. As exemplified on these two websites, there are methods available to create rather than purchase miniature wargaming scenery.

For those who prefer buying pre-made miniature wargaming scenery as opposed to making your own objects, Neal Catapano's online store The War Store has been selling "miniature wargame and related hobby products" since 1999. The New York state-based store sells dice, paint, tools, glue, figure booster packs, as well as the all important terrain, buildings and bases. Among the objects included in The War Store's website are 15mm buildings from World War II Europe.

Those include both untouched and ruined buildings such as homes, churches and villas, as well as hedges, gates, artillery positions, trees, bridges and bunkers. The War Store accepts all major credit cards, money orders and Pay Pal and charges $3.95 for shipping via the United States Postal Service's
Priority Mail.

For more information on miniature wargaming scenery, books are available for wargamers wishing to gain more information on their hobby. First and foremost is H.G. Wells' book Little Wars. Amazon.com considers Wells to be "one of the fathers of modern science fiction." Little Wars written in 1913 just before World War I, is described in detail in an article written by Steffan O'Sullivan. In his article, O'Sullivan says that Wells' rules itself take up only a small portion of the book. Throughout the rest of the book, Wells describes how he came to write his wargame, the evolution of the rules, and descriptions of his battles. Wells also wrote about how much better wargaming is than real warfare.

Next is Bruce Quarrie's Beginner's guide to Wargaming. Barnes and Noble's website calls Quarrie's book "(A) pleasant, concise, informative, and recommended guide. Quarrie traces the evolution of military simulations from professional training device to leisure pursuit" which was largely caused by Wells' Little Wars book. Gaming varieties include miniature wargames, board games, and computer games as well as real warfare from the beginning to the space age. This item is currently out of stock at Barnes and Noble.

Fantasy Wargaming, compiled and edited by Bruce Galloway, and Nicholas Palmer's book, The Comprehensive Guide to Board Wargaming, are both currently out of print accordering to Borders Books. However, a used copy might be obtained from a seller using Amazon.com's website.
