In the wargaming world, gamers cannot play without wargaming figures. There are many sizes and categories of wargaming figures and other information to gather before someone can even begin as a wargamer. Here are some facts for a rookie wargamer.
There are four categories of wargaming figures to choose from: Fantasy, Historical, Science Fiction and Toy Gaming. In the Fantasy category, figures include men, elves, dwarves, etc. Historical figures include those from Ancient and Medieval times, the American Civil War, both World Wars, right up to modern warfare. Science Fiction, obviously, deals with starships and space battles as well as combat on a planet's surface, and futuristic gang warfare. For a special change of pace, gamers can purchase special chess sets that feature wargaming titles such as Dungeons and Dragons. Therefore, wargamers who know how to play Chess can have a little extra fun in their leisure time.
The online figure site Mithril sells an extensive list of 32mm and 54mm wargaming figures, paints, brushes, and starter kits. Their figures include Hobbit characters such as Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins, and Glorfindel, The Hobbit boxed sets, protective and carrying cases. Because the Mithril website is based in Britain, prices are listed in pounds rather than American dollars. Figures are priced at approximately €3.99 and €4.99 to a set of ten figures priced at €49.99.
Another online wargaming store, The Wargames Figures Company located in Scotland, sells wargaming figures as small as 6mm with time periods ranging from Ancient to Post War and Modern times, plus Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Universal and Uncategorized periods. For example, a 10mm figure of a Vietnam War era "Rifleman standing" figure costs £0.95 for 10 figures. Also, a starter pack of 20mm figures from the American Civil War are priced at £55.00 for either a Union or Confederate soldier figure.
New on the scene is a line of horror figures. WizKids sells the HorrorClix Starter Set for $14.99 and Booster Pack for $7.99. The starter set includes six figures "from across the horror spectrum" such as zombies, werewolves, and vampires, twelve innocent victims, rules, a scenario tome, and dice. The booster pack expands the starter set with 96 monsters in the first release. Those monsters include the Headless Horseman and Jack the Ripper.
Also available from WizKids is the line of figures for both DC and Marvel comic characters. Comic book-based wargamers can choose from dozens of characters for miniature warfare games. DC characters include Batman, Superman and the Justice League. Characters from Marvel comics include Spider-Man and the X-Men.
In the world of wargaming, miniature wargaming figures are clearly more diverse than soldiers, wizards, dragons and Hobbits.
